Community Groups

For decades, since the formation of the congregation, there was a thriving Sisterhood and Men’s Club, often divided into gender conforming roles within the synagogue. Sisterhood coordinated the onegs, and the rummage sale, enjoyed pot lucks & book clubs, and raised money through various fundraising for the benefit of the Temple and greater community.  Men’s Club helped move boxes for High Holidays, enjoyed lectures and whiskey tastings, played ping pong and went bowling and more. Chai Club, formed for our senior members, enjoyed programs like current events with the Rabbi and monthly meals in a local restaurant.

Over the last decade, and perhaps even beyond, Jewish American culture has shifted.

Households often have two working parents with less time to volunteer, or our initial Chai Club senior members aged beyond the ability to drive or simply passed away. The once beloved programs began to dwindle without as many helping hands to lessen the task load that was often focused on raising money. What did this mean for the Temple and supporting our congregational community, and enriching our lives through Judaism, personal growth, and friendship? It meant change.

A few years ago, we met with members to ask what they wanted, and how they wanted to build connection and community within the congregation. Their responses led to the dissolution of the gender-based Sisterhood & Men’s Club and re-envisioned a Community group. This new group would embody all members but is nimble enough for some of the favorites to continue. While there are still opportunities for a men’s or women’s only event, often we simply invite everyone. The focus is now on enhancing our social and educational and connection opportunities instead of fundraising.

Our intergender and intergenerational community activities further our personal and congregational commitment to Jewish ideals, education, spirituality, social action, and leadership development – as well as provide joy and camaraderie
