While we consider our congregation more than just a building, we are so thankful to have a building. As the world changes and there are more opportunities for virtual interaction, our building continues to be a foundational component of our community. We hold services in our sanctuary, classes in our religious school wing, study and schmoozing in our community room, simchas in our social hall. Our staff continue to be on site, in our building. Even though we often have the ability to meet virtually, or even in a hybrid format, we find that our beautiful building serves as a conduit for community in a time when people need to gather together.
Temple Sinai was founded in 1956 by a small group of Jewish families who were looking to form a new Reform congregation in Greater Hartford. After meeting in living rooms and other locations in Newington, in 1959 the growing group purchased land at 41 West Hartford Road with space designated for a Memorial Park in the southwest corner of the lot. The first services were held in the building in 1970. A capital campaign was launched in the early 2000’s for the purpose of renovating the building to allow for accessibility accommodations to be made including a renovation of the existing sanctuary as well as the addition of office space, storage, meeting rooms, updated restrooms, and more. During the renovations, religious school continued in our school wing and services were held at the Solomon Schechter Day School in West Hartford. The first services held in our newly renovated sanctuary was a joyous celebration of our history and warm and welcoming community.
Today, our building is maintained by a mixture of professional staff and volunteers to ensure a safe, welcoming, and community space for all. If you are interested in facilities or have a special skill for caring for spaces, please contact the office to be connected with our Facilities Chairperson.
